Itinerary

Day 3 - Arrival in Moshi

Our guide will meet you outside your gate when you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport. From there we will travel back to the hotel, check in, and get some well needed rest.
Today will give you a chance to catch up on some well needed rest; however, if you're too excited to sleep, we'll be happy to explore the city of Moshi with you!

Kilimanjaro Airport

(Optional day trips)

Waterfall/ Coffee Hike - Take a hike to see some truly incredible waterfalls inside of the Kilimanjaro National Park. During the hike we'll also stop by a coffee plantation for a chance to see how it's grown and harvested.

Kilimanjaro Waterfall

Day 5 - We start on our Machame route Climb

This is one of, if not the best, routes to climb. Our route has the highest success rates and some of the best scenery.

Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 6.7 Miles
Habitat: Montane forest

Your day starts with a 45-minute drive to the Machame Gate (6,000ft). The guides and porters pack your supplies and head for the first camp. Rain is a strong possibility, so having rain gear is highly recommended. We'll stop for lunch about halfway to the Machame camp (9,908ft) in the late afternoon.

Porters will have your tent set up prior to your arrival to the camp. The cook will prepare dinner before you retire to your tent for the night.

Kilimanjaro Rainforest

Day 7 - Shira Camp (12,621Ft.) to the Lava Tower (15,229Ft.) to Barranco Camp (13,070Ft.)

Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 6.5 Miles
Habitat: Semi-desert

The route turns into a semi-desert surrounding the Lava Tower (15,229Ft.), which we'll reach in about 5 hours. Lunch will be served and we'll continue. The Lava Tower is where some climbers start experiencing the symptoms of higher altitudes. Descending 2200Ft. to the Barranco camp will help to relieve some of those early symptoms. This is normal and serves as a good warm up for higher elevations.

Kilimanjaro Shira Camp

Day 10 - Mweka Camp (10,137Ft.) to the Mweka Gate (5383Ft.)

Hiking time: 4 to 6 hours
Distance: Approximately 5 Miles
Habitat: Rainforest

After an early breakfast, it's a short 4-6 hour hike back to the Park gate. This short hike is a great way to stretch out from yesterday and is extremely scenic, often encountering wild monkeys and exotic birds.

We will then exit the park for a nice celebratory dinner in Moshi.

Kilimanjaro Forest

Day 11 - Rest Day in Moshi

Time to celebrate the climb and unwind a bit after hiking for days.
We'll get a big meal, some drinks, and celebrate our accomplishment!

Moshi Rest Day

Day 15 - Say your Final Goodbyes to Moshi and Africa

Saying goodbye can be so sad, expecially after you've seen how wonderful Moshi town is.
The last day will be used to rest, party, and see things that other more rushed toursists will never see.

Kilimanjaro from Moshi

Day 16 - Flight home

After saying our goodbyes to Africa, we will head to the airport for your flight back home.

However, you can always contact us for special leaving instructions!

NYC Penn Station

Days 1 & 2 - Meet at Kilimanjaro Airport

After getting through customs & other assorted factors, we'll meet you outside!

Kilimanjaro Rest

Days 3 and 4 - Relax and Prepare in Moshi

Now that we're in Moshi, we'll take some time to set up preparations for our climb. All gear will be checked, and rentals (clothing and personal gear) will be available if needed.
This will also give us a chance to take some interesting day trips.

Kilimanjaro Book

(Optional day trips)

Shopping around Moshi with Irene - Our close friend Irene owns a local dress shop in town and makes her clothing from some of the best fabric in Moshi. You can choose the fabric, the style, and have everything made to preference! It's a perfect gift to bring home.

Kilimanjaro Plant

Day 6 - Machame Camp (9908Ft.) to Shira Camp (12621Ft.)

Hiking time: 6 hours
Distance: Approximately 3.2 Miles
Habitat: Moorland

After breakfast, we start our day. It takes about an hour or so to get to the moorland zone, then continuing to the Shira campsite at 12,621Ft. The porters will again supply you with a fully set up campsite and dinner. The cold will start to be more noticeable. This night will be even colder than the previous, with temperatures dropping to well below freezing. Our sleeping bags can endure temperatures reaching to -20 degrees to ensure a well rest.

Kilimanjaro Summit

Day 8 - Barranco Camp (13,070Ft.) to Barafu Camp (15,357Ft.)

Hiking time: 7 hours
Distance: Approximately 6 Miles
Habitat: Alpine desert

After spending the night, we make our way up the Barranco Wall. This day provides some of the best views of our trip. After a couple more hours we'll reach the Barafu Camp.

Kilimanjaro Summit

Day 9 - Summit Day

Hiking time: 7 to 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, 6 to 8 hours to descend to Mweka Camp
Distance: Approximately 3 Mile ascent and 6 Mile descent
Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit

We'll wake up around 11:30pm, check gear again, get some tea and snacks, and off we go!

The ascent can be extremely cold, steep, and rocky until Stella Point. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of our trip.

At Stella Point (18,828Ft.) we stop for a brief rest and experience the joy of being so close to the top. From Stella Point, it's only 2 more hours to Uhuru Peak (19,341Ft.). We try to reach summit around sunrise, to catch some amazing views!

We will then walk back to Barafu, which takes about 3 hours, before heading down to the Mweka hut where we'll spend our final night.

Kilimanjaro Ngorongoro

Days 12 to 14 - Safari to Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti*

At this point of the trip, the group members on our 12-day option will head back home in the morning.
The rest will head to the Ngorongoro crater and our wonderful travel lodge.

*Since the animals migrate during specific seasons, we may adjust the second Safari park location in order to get the most out of the experience.

Kilimanjaro Waterfalls

(Optional day trips)

Additional Waterfalls - If you haven't had enough beautiful nature, trust us there's PLENTY to see and do in Moshi.
Kikuletwa Hotsprings - See and bathe in crystal blue waters, a must see when staying in Moshi.

More Information

Safety in Africa:
Tanzania is one of the safest countries in Africa.
Crime is usually only theft, at it's worst (which is even rare). People are incredibly friendly and welcoming, but still using common sense goes a long way. You should NOT be out walking alone at night or in general.

Kilimanjaro is an extremely safe climb, with huts at most stops and popular routes. Problems (if they occur) are addressed immediately. Still every year people get hurt or die, usually from poor planning or from using a poor guide service.
During the safari, most animals will either completely ignore you or try to steal your food. Please do not antagonize the animals.

The lesson is to exercise travel smarts and common sense. LISTEN TO YOUR GUIDES! They are here to make sure you're having the best possible experience.

Cool Surprises:
- Delicious local dinners.
- The best parties in Moshi.
- And much more that you'll have to wait and see!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tipping policy?
Tipping for the Kilimanjaro climb averages around $300/per person. This includes all of the porters, cooks, and guides. Upwards of 20-30 per group.
While our local guides are paid much higher than other companies and tipping is not 'required', it is highly recommended. Every dollar means a ton in the world of tips.

What should I pack for the climb and for Africa?
Please check our packing page dedicated to the climb.

What kind of physical condition should I be in?
This question is a bit harder to answer. People in incredible physical shape can get altitude sickness just as bad as people in horrible shape.
But as a general guideline, the climb is very difficult. Do not underestimate it. You should be in excellent cardiovascular shape. DO NOT attempt if you have pre-existing heart conditions or breathing conditions (Unless your doctor approves it).

Do I need any vaccine's?
We suggest going to the CDC's website, but a Yellow fever vaccine is a must have.
